How do I properly account for Added Sugars on USA labels?
Added sugars have only been required on US Labels as of 2020. Some ingredients have not yet been updated with the Added Sugars data. This is particularly important to many ingredients which are included in the USDA database.
Additionally, recent labeling regulations allow single-ingredient sugar products (examples: table sugar, brown sugar, honey, etc.) to display only the Total Sugar value on their labels, along with the Percent Daily Value (%DV) for the Added Sugars.
This is an example of a label, highlighting the Total Sugars amount and the Added Sugars %DV:
If the nutrition data is entered from a single-ingredient sugar product label, or if using a single-ingredient sugar product from the USDA database that has not been updated with the added sugars data, the Added Sugars field will not be correctly populated.
This value must be added manually.
Open the Ingredient.
- Click on Nutrients.
- Notice that none of the fields for USDA ingredients are editable, except Added Sugars.
- Enter the correct value in the Added Sugars field.
- In nearly all cases, for single-sugar products, the Added Sugars amount will equal the Sugars amount.
Note: NutriCalc cannot automatically distinguish naturally occurring sugars from added sugars to determine which values should be displayed.
