Daily Value percentages (%DV) sometimes display '0' even though there is an amount in the 'Amount' column.
There are strict rounding requirements for how nutrients and their %DVs are displayed on the Nutrition Facts label.
The USA rounding rules for the percent Daily Value are as follows:
- If the %DV is less than 2%, it can be rounded to 0
- If the %DV is less than or equal 10%, it should be rounded to nearest 2%
- If the %DV is between 10 and 50%, it should be rounded to nearest 5%
- If the %DV is greater than 50%, it should be rounded to nearest 10%
Example:
The Daily Value for Sodium is 2300 mg.
A product contains 45 mg of Sodium.
45g/2300g = 1.9%. Since this is less than 2%, it rounds to zero and the label will show 50g as the quantitative value for Sodium, but 0% for the %DV.
