NutriCalc allows adding voluntary nutrients, override nutrient values, and modify nutrient names for the Health Canada labels.
Adding Voluntary Nutrients
When making claims about voluntary nutrients on the package, those nutrients must be displayed on the label as well. Including voluntary nutrients for marketing and end-consumer education is additionally possible.
Add voluntary nutrients:
- Open the recipe and click the Reports tab.
- Locate the Canada Label card and open it by clicking on View.
- There are two options to begin the editing process.
- Click on either the vertical ellipsis in the upper right corner of the Canada Label window and select Edit.
- Click directly on the edit icon.
- Check the box for any voluntary ingredient which you want displayed on the label. The box will appear blue. Note: Required nutrients cannot be unselected.
Manual edits:
- Click the number 2 Edit button. (In this example, under Calculation: None)
- Type the desired new text or values. Additionally, use this for abbreviations or to change the nutrient values.
- After finishing editing, select the number 3 button to resize the label, or number 4 button to preview the label.
Note: If a nutrient value is changed, the %DV will also have to be changed manually. Modified values will be reflected in the Nutrition Facts only; they will not appear on any other reports.
This list contains the most current acceptable abbreviations:
- %DV for %Daily Value
- %VQ for Valeur Quotidienne
- Vit for vitamin
- kJ for kilojoules
- tsp (in English) for teaspoon
- tbsp (inEnglish) for tablespoon
- c. à thé (in French) for cuillère à thé
- c. à soupe (in French) for cuillère à soupe
View and return to default values:
It is possible to view or hide the default values with the toggle.
Clicking Reset will return to those values.
Resizing the Label
Why is manual resizing important?
Regulations are specific about the minimum font size allowed on labels. When downloading a label that is too large and resizing it using an image editing software, it will size proportionally. This may result in a non-compliant font size. To remedy this, NutriCalc offers the ability to size the label onscreen. NutriCalc will not allow the label to display under the legal font size or narrower than would be feasible. Resizing is available only. in the horizontal direction, since height depends on the amount of nutrients.
Manually Resize the Label
- Click the number 3 button ,labelled Resize the upper portion of the window.
- Adjust the width by grabbing the right edge of the label and dragging it either left to reduce the size, or to the right to expand. Notice that the width and white space adjust while the font remains the same. Recommendation is to edit the size of the label by adjusting here, as close as possible to the desired print size, prior to downloading. Then size the label proportionally using your image-editing software.
- When finished with the edits, click button 4 to preview the label.
Preview
Once the label has be adjusted as desired, this is where the final label can be viewed, prior to printing or downloading. Once it looks as desired, click Save. If it isn't quite as expected or desired, use the back button or icons at the top of the window to return to previous screens to readjust.
