Reference Intakes (RIs) are nutritional guidelines used in the UK and EU to help consumers understand how food and drink products contribute to a healthy daily diet. They are based on the average needs of an adult woman consuming 2000 kcal per day, though individual requirements may vary. Reference Intakes are not strict targets but serve as benchmarks for energy and key nutrients like fat, saturates, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, and salt. Food labels often show the percentage to RI per portion, aiding informed choices. These replace the older Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs). Reference Intakes offer a united standard across adults. In the UK, this information is frequently paired with a traffic light system on packaging to visually indicate nutrient levels, making it easier for consumers to assess a product's nutritional value at a glance.
